Game On! Engaging Learners Through Interactive Gamified Course Design
In collaboration with Anna Garner
This presentation introduced a gamification toolkit designed to support meaningful, human-centered engagement in online learning. Aligned with ASU’s Principled Innovation framework, the session shared low-code strategies to strengthen belonging, motivation, and participation. The scalable five-dimension model includes Kinship, Engagement, Motivation, Ethics, and Future-Readiness, connecting game design principles to learning psychology, equity, and long-term learner growth.
OoDLPalooza is our Office of Digital Learning’s internal Instructional Design conference, held each fall and spring to celebrate the creativity, innovation, and expertise within our team. Designed as a space by and for instructional designers, OoDLPalooza brings colleagues together to share ideas, showcase passion projects, and explore practical strategies that enhance our work and impact. Through presentations, demonstrations, and interactive sessions, team members highlight emerging practices, creative solutions, lessons learned, and tools that support effective, learner-centered design. Beyond professional learning, OoDLPalooza is grounded in connection, creating opportunities to build community, spark inspiration, and recognize the thoughtful work happening across our office. At its heart, OoDLPalooza is a celebration of our shared craft: a space to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and strengthen the collaborative culture that drives our Instructional Design work forward.
How Interactives Impact Learning Design
In collaboration with Kristin Powell
This session explored how strategic use of interactive elements can strengthen alignment between learning objectives and learner outcomes. Grounded in needs-based analysis, the presentation demonstrated how Articulate Storyline interaction types such as drag-and-drop, tabs, and hover states can be intentionally selected to support cognitive processing and meaningful engagement. Applied prototypes showcased scenario-based learning, progressive disclosure, and authentic practice to illustrate how purposeful interactivity can deepen understanding and support transfer.
The Learner's Journey: Using the Hero's Path to Design Transformative Learning
This presentation introduced a narrative-based instructional design framework that uses the Hero’s Journey to support learner motivation, identity development, and transformation. The session presented a “Theory of Tension” model that positions cognitive, emotional, social, and identity challenges as productive drivers of deep learning and persistence. Participants explored how story structure can be used to design learning experiences that feel meaningful, growth-oriented, and personally relevant. This presentation introduced a gamification toolkit designed to support meaningful, human-centered engagement in online learning.
